Writer’s Compass Coaching

One-to-one Coaching for Writers with Resistance.

“a writer is one to whom writing comes harder than to anybody else.” — Thomas Mann

As a book coach, I get to see the magic happen.

As writers progress through a draft, at some point, the stuff getting in the way recedes and they start using their craft with new boldness and confidence, putting down words with increasing ease.

But what is this 'stuff', and how can we get it out of the way?

That's the mystery that we explore together with Writer's Compass Coaching.

We will play Miss Marple.

We will look for clues in your backstory, investigating your creative wounds and the surprising details of your life history that subconsciously steer you away from the page and make writing feel like wading through treacle.

We will imaginatively personify the parts of ourselves that are afraid and resistant and interview them as witnesses.

They may be quite delightful or utterly villainous.

Meeting them will feel imaginative, intimate, and moving. And it will also help you reassure them that you’ve got this and notice when they’re crying out for your attention.

We will also meet a crew of inner allies; the more resilient, wiser parts of yourself that will help you overcome the obstacles in your way.

You’ll become familiar with these characters, just as you would the characters in your novel. You’ll start to know it’s them speaking when you tell yourself you’re not good enough, you’re wasting your time, or, conversely, that this is what you want, and you deserve to hold space for it.

And you'll feel lighter, more like yourself, less cautious as a writer, more certain, BRAVER.

This is Writer’s Compass Coaching.

I know the words on the page are just the tip of the iceberg with creative writing. That’s why I trained as a self-belief coach. This coaching uses evidence-based tools rooted in developmental psychology to awaken your creativity and overcome resistance.

Writer’s Compass coaching will help you:

✔ Navigate resistance, which can show up as self-doubt, perfectionism and procrastination, paralysis, passivity, proving yourself and people-pleasing.

✔ Dream big and take small steps towards your goals.

✔ Tune into your self-trust and creative process.

✔ Get out of your own way.

✔ Handle judgement and criticism even if it’s coming from inside your head.

✔ Write from vision and desire, rather than from ‘shoulds’ and ‘can’ts.’

FAQ

+ What’s included?

Writer's Compass includes: Six spacious, 60-90 minute calls and recordings of the calls so you can capture and revisit any epiphanies. Self-belief coaching tools including recordings of guided visualisations, journaling prompts, and exercises.

+ What does it cost?

The investment is £500.

+ What if I can't decide between Writer's Compass and Booksong Book Coaching?

You can seamlessly transition into Booksong book coaching if you begin to want guidance around a particular project. If at any point you would like me to read and give feedback on your work, you can purchase add-ons at a rate of £64 per 5,000 words (annotated) or £40 per 5,000 words (not annotated). I'd love to join you in the fictional world you're creating; being there to brainstorm, untangle and talk it through, as well as helping you commit words to the page.

+ When are you available for calls?

We will agree to a regular appointment when you sign up or after the first call.

I prefer to hold calls between 8:45 a.m. and 14:45 p.m. (UK time), though I very often can work around this if that isn't possible for you. Ideally, you will choose a slot that suits you, and that will be reserved for you for the entire coaching programme.

+ How do you conduct calls?

We will meet on zoom unless you can come to my kitchen table in Worcestershire, UK (where you are most welcome!).
